Hawaiʻi State Art Museum First Friday May 5, 2023
Free, all ages events in May include First Friday, Super Saturday, and The Vibe. Experience Hawaiʻi through the artwork of Hawaiʻi students in the 2023 Scholastic Student Art Awards and the 2023 Young Artists of Hawaiʻi exhibits!

Friday May 5, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum:
Live music performances in the outdoor Sculpture Garden by Simple Souls and Jabari Prevost. Food vendors will be at the museum. All museum galleries will be open (free admission), including the 2023 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Art Awards exhibit, featuring award-winning artworks by Hawaiʻi students grades 7-12. Free admission, all ages welcome!

The Vibe Friday May 12
The Vibe, Friday May 12, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Live music performances in the outdoor Sculpture Garden. Food vendors will be at the museum. All museum galleries will be open (free admission). Free admission, all ages welcome!

Super Saturday May 20
Super Saturday, May 20, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Hands-on art activities for all ages! Free and family-friendly. All museum galleries will be open (free admission), including the 2023 Young Artists of Hawaiʻi exhibit, featuring award-winning artworks by Hawaiʻi students grades K-7.

Experience Hawaiʻi through the artwork of students! The annual Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Art Awards Exhibit features award-winning artworks by Hawaiʻi students grades 7-12. Top award winning artworks will continue to the national level competition! Last day to view: Saturday, May 6, 2023. Free admission.

2023 Young Artists of Hawaiʻi
May 20 - July 8, 2023
Young Artists of Hawaiʻi is an annual student art competition and exhibition. Presented by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority, and Gravitas Pasifika, this program recognizes creative excellence among Hawaiʻi’s public and private school students, Kindergarten through sixth grade. A panel of judges select 96 works for the exhibition, which is presented at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. Replicas of the artworks are also displayed at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center for one year, in the Pa Kamaliʻi Courtyard on the third floor.

The 2023 theme is “Good Leaders Taking Action: What does it look like when good leaders get others involved to make a positive change?”

Mahalo nui to the 2023 judges, Representative Sonny Ganaden (Hawaiʻi State Legislature), Rosina Potter (Executive Director, Hawaiʻi Contemporary), and Rachael Kim (Young Artists of Hawaiʻi Youth Ambassador). The addition of a Youth Ambassador judge is new this year - SFCA Art in Public Places Project Manager Kamakani Konia says “Rachael is a Junior at Mid-Pacific Institute and one f the most decorated artists from this year’s Hawai‘i Regional Scholastic Art Awards. One of the goals for Young Artists this year was to better bridge the gap between our student exhibition programming and perpetuate the theme of leadership within our schools by having big kids guide little kids.”

2023 Young Artists of Hawaiʻi

In the POD: “Under the Blue” Community Art Installation

Honolulu Theatre for Youth cast members rehearsing with a fish puppet in front of a set decorated with knit and crochet coral and other marine life.
This community art installation in the first phase of an immersive art experience that explores the various zones of the ocean. Inspired by phytoplankton, Native Hawaiian artists Solomon Enos encourages people of all ages to make dots and dashes on the wall, which will turn into the backdrop of an immersive ocean performance venue for young people with developmental disabilities and disorders (for more information, please visit the Honolulu Theatre for Youth website: membership.htyweb.org/product/under-the-blue-experience-at-hisam). Next season, there will be Honolulu Theatre for Youth performances of a show version of “Under the Blue” for all families to enjoy.

This project is a partnership of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Hawaiʻi State Art Museum, the Friends of the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum, and the Honolulu Theatre for Youth.

“Accession: recent additions to the Art in Public Places Collection”
Gain insight into the diversity of artworks being created in Hawaiʻi today in this exhibit, displaying a selection of 51 recent additions to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts’ (SFCA) Art Public Places Collection by 38 artists. Artworks from the SFCA’s Art in Public Places Collection are displayed in state government sites across the islands, including schools, libraries, and state office buildings. The State Art Museum and Art in Public Places Collection are part of the SFCA Art in Public Places Program.

Artists: Amber Aguirre, Bernice Akamine, Margaret Barnaby, Derek Bencomo, Don Bernshouse, Jake Boggs, Tobias Brill, Allyn Bromley, Sean K. L. Browne, Gaye Chan, Melissa Chimera, Ghislaine D. Chock, Jonathan Yukio Clark, Debra Drexler, John Fackrell, Lynn Martin Graton, J. D. Griggs, Daven Hee and Joy Sanchez, Darius Homayounpour, Roen Hufford, May Izumi, John Krenik, Tom Lieber, Constance Liu, Licia McDonald, Emily McIlroy, Sarah Metz, Susan Mori, Richard Nelson, Carl Franklin Kaʻailaʻau Pao, Maya Lea Portner, Darold Ramelb, Don Shamblin, Esther Shimazu, Juvana Soliven, Dalani Tanahy, and Maile Yawata. “Accession” will be open through 2023.
