Professional Development for Classroom Teachers
Professional Development classes on the fine arts and arts integration are offered several times a year for classroom teachers. State of Hawaiʻi Department of Education (DOE) teachers can sign up to receive Professional Development and Educational Research Institute (PDERI) credit for these classes. The goal is to help teachers gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to teach standards-based fine arts in their own classrooms. The classes are coordinated by the Honolulu Theatre for Youth with funding from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawaiʻi and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Spring 2023 Professional Development Courses:

Art Bento on Hiatus
After many years of successfully administering the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum's Art Bento museum education program, we will be evaluating and restructuring the program during the 2023 Fiscal Year. During this time we will be interviewing all of those involved, including teachers, teaching artists, administrators and students. Our goal is to offer a museum education program that is more inclusive, expanding beyond Oʻahu to better engage students statewide. For those schools who are interested in coming to the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum this year, we will be offering school visits for the School Year 22/23. Please contact hisam@hawaii.gov for more details.

Grants and Opportunities

Image: ʻAkepa by Saxony Charlot. Drawing of an ʻakepa bird perched on a branch of ʻohelo with blossoms and berries. This drawing was featured as the University of Hawaiʻi (UH) News Image of the Week on September 14, 2022. Charlot is a UH-Hilo undergraduate student in environmental studies. Charlot shared, “Over the summer I had the opportunity to spend time in Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge through my work at the LOHE Lab at UH Hilo. There I helped with ongoing bioacoustics projects focused on recording bird species in the area, which included many endangered Hawaiian honeycreepers. I was able to see endemic birds that I have wanted to see for many years, including ʻakepa, which quickly stole my heart. I drew this ʻakepa with ʻohelo berries, partially inspired by my experiences in the field, and also inspired by a biologist who suggested this lesser-known ecological pairing.”

Get Ready for the 2023 Hawaiʻi State Legislature Grant-In-Aid
Get ready for the Hawaiʻi State Legislature 2023 Chapter 42F (Grant-in-Aid)! The Grant-in-Aid application period typically opens in early January and closes shortly after the legislative session begins in late January. Review the 2022 GIA information at Capitol.Hawaii.gov/GIA/GIA.aspx to prepare (please note that instructions may change). For example, organizations will need a Certificate of Good Standing from the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA), which may take a few weeks to receive (learn more about how to request a Certificate of Good Standing on the DCCA website: cca.hawaii.gov/breg/faqs/general/can-i-request-a-good-standing-certificate/). Grant awards and applications are also posted with the 2022 GIA information.

There are two types of grants: Operating and Capital Improvement Project (CIP) grants. Generally, Operating grants are for an organization’s program expenses and CIP grants are for construction projects. The Legislature decides who is awarded a grant, the type of grant, the award amount, what the funds can be used for, and which state department will administer said award. Please contact the House Committee on Finance staff (808/586-6200) or Senate Committee on Ways and Means staff (808/586-6800) if you have questions.
