When: December 31, 2021 at Midnight

BELLPORT, NY and HONOLULU, HI
(December 23, 2021) – Waikiki Beach in Honolulu will be saying goodbye to 2021 and a big ALOHA to 2022 with a tremendous fireworks performance! Waikiki Improvement Association and Fireworks by Grucci-Hawaii join together for the 15th year, celebrating with an extraordinary kickoff to the New Year!

Countless tourists and Waikiki residents head to the beachfront for the much-anticipated, Waikiki Improvement Association (WIA) fireworks spectacular each New Year’s Eve. Since 2006, world-renowned Fireworks by Grucci has partnered with WIA for an awe- inspiring farewell to the past year. After a hiatus in 2020 due to Covid-19, to introduce 2022, Fireworks by Grucci promises yet another spectacular performance for all visiting and gathering on Waikiki beach onNew Year’s Eve!

“We are truly honored that Waikiki Improvement Association has again commissioned us to create a performance to celebrate the end of this year and welcome 2022. Our Hawaii based team of Pyrotechnicians look forward to delivering an exciting performance to entertain the thousands of guests and residents along Waikiki beach”, says Fireworks by Grucci CEO and Creative Director, Phil Grucci. “The Waikiki beach setting coupled with a warm starry night presents an incredible stage for us to exhibit our choreographed performance. We hope that this year’s show will capture the palpable energy felt on New Year’s Eve and bring joy to the individuals who choose to celebrate the New Year at this breathtaking location.”

Five minutes before the clock strikes midnight, watch for the first announcement “salute” displayed from a barge offshore to signal the countdown to midnight. Groups of family and friends along the beach will shuffle as the countdown begins, softly at first, “10! 9! 8!...” louder as midnight grows nearer... “3! 2! 1! HAPPY NEW YEAR!” At the stroke of midnight, the sky will be filled with electrifying colors and bright lights. Grucci’s unique designs will include dazzling color changing chrysanthemums, double crackling peonies, glittering strobes, and of course the majestic Brocade Kamuro shells that create a golden weeping willow like effect descending downward towards the water. The largest aerial shell measuring 8” in diameter, will be one of the largest displayed in the area on New Year’s Eve. Adding to the celebratory energy of the night will be a brilliant custom soundtrack featuring local and pop artists such as Mariah Carey, Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, Kalapana, Crossing Rain, BTS, Pink, and many more!

As a gift to the community, Hawaiʻi Public Radio will air a live radio special as part of the Waikiki New Year’s Eve fireworks show, taking place Friday, December 31. The broadcast will consist of a countdown to the stroke of midnight, followed by a medley of local and pop music time synched with the Waikiki fireworks spectacle. It will culminate Bridging the Gap’s New Year’s Eve special (10 p.m. - midnight on HPR-1), hosted annually by Jon Alan.

Host Jon Alan is well known to late night listeners of HPR-1 as the voice of Blues from the Basement (Saturdays at 10 p.m. - Sundays at 1 a.m.) and B-Sides and Beyond (Sundays 10 p.m. - midnight). He traditionally brings in the new year for the station as guest host on Bridging the Gap each New Year’s Eve.

The fireworks show is funded by Waikiki Improvement Association, who have hired New York company Fireworks by Grucci as a gift to visitors and the local community. The company has produced the Waikiki fireworks show annually since 2006 (there was no 2020 show due to the pandemic). Grucci’s unique designs will include color changing chrysanthemums, double crackling peonies, glittering strobes, and Brocade Kamuro shells that create a golden weeping willow-like effect descending towards the water. The largest aerial shell measuring 8’ in diameter, will be one of the largest displayed in the area on New Year’s Eve. Attendees can tune in via traditional radio on 88.1 and 88.5 FM, by streaming on the HPR website or mobile app, or by using the smart speaker command “play Hawaiʻi Public Radio.”
