3rd Annual Pa‘akai Gala -- October 18, 2014
Nā Kama Kai, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth by creating, conducting and supporting ocean-based programs, is holding its 3rd annual Pa‘akai Gala on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Royal Hawaiian Monarch Room in Waikiki.
This special event will feature outstanding musical entertainment, exceptional cuisine, and a silent auction to benefit Nā Kama Kai. Since its founding in 2008 by world longboard champion and renowned waterman Duane DeSoto, Nā Kama Kai has reached out to 7,500 children in Hawai‘i, Tahiti, Japan and California, perpetuating an awareness of ocean culture, safety and conservation.
The contributions of dedicated sponsors and volunteers have enabled Nā Kama Kai to continue its mission and Ocean Safety and Conservation Awareness Clinics, but DeSoto said that Pa‘akai is critical to preserving and expanding the organization's outreach for years to come.
"Paʻakai Gala is the once a year opportunity for the community to show their support for Hawaiʻi's primer hands-on ocean education program for children. Nā Kama Kai saves lives!" said DeSoto. "Children are instinctually using Nā Kama Kai education and experience to keep themselves safe as well as their friends and family while simultaneously assuming responsibility for the health and well being of our environment and natural resources. Soon our programs will be offered to all of Hawaiʻi keiki through community satellite locations."
Like his passion for surfing, DeSoto, a father of seven, is "committed to our keiki," hence his nonprofit's motto: Keiki Aloha, Kai Aloha, "Beloved Child, Beloved Sea."
The Pa‘akai Gala program begins at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails, a silent auction, and music by Hawaiian singer and guitarist Ernie Cruz Jr. Dinner will be served at 7, and the benefit will conclude with a performance by Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winner Willie K. The master of ceremonies will be Hawaii News Now's Ke‘ahi Tucker.
"We would like to extend an invitation to you to attend Pa‘akai or to participate by making a donation to our silent auction," DeSoto said. "100 percent of the proceeds will go directly into increasing the capacity of our community through nurturing and engaging Hawai‘i's youth to become more aware of the importance of ocean safety and conservation."
Tickets and sponsorship tables will range from Kaihohonu (deep ocean), which includes VIP seating for 10, specialty wines, logo placement in the event program and online, and a canoe & private stand-up paddling session for up to 20 people, to Kahakai (shoreline), which includes individual seating, dinner, entertainment and three cocktail tickets. More information can be found at www.nakamakai.org or call Duane DeSoto at (808)864-9164.
