Chris Vandercook Band and "The Three Kings," Saturday, June 14th in the Atherton

A tribute to blues giants B.B. King, Albert King and Freddy King

Singer-guitarist Chris Vandercook and his band, augmented with a horn section, pay tribute to "The Three Kings," blues giants B.B. King, Albert King and Freddy King, in the intimacy of HPR's Atherton Studio on Saturday, June 14th at 7:30 p.m. Unrelated to one another except for the mastery of their art, over the year's each musician's distinctive playing style and sound has come to define the modern electric blues sound. Vandercook's salute will feature original hits, new songs, and new arrangements for horns inspired by "The Three Kings." The lineup for this special evening will include: Vandercook (vocals, guitar); Paul Stanley (saxophone) and Ray Williams (trumpet) of the Powerhouse Horns; Bobby Thursby (organ) and Chris Vandercook Band regulars drummer Scott Shafer and bassist Ernie Provencher. Reservations may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (808-955-8821) during regular business hours. Tickets are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaii Public Radio at 738 Kaheka Street in Honolulu.

Chris Vandercook has played guitar professionally for more than thirty years and while comfortable and proficient in wide variety of styles and genres, he is perhaps best known as an interpreter of the blues. He's bandleader for the Chris Vandercook Band, an arranger and a soloist. In addition, he has contributed album notes for Verve Records on classic recordings by Kenny Burrell and Dizzy Gillespie. Since 2011 Vandercook has served as co-host for Hawaii Public Radio's daily statewide interview program, The Conversation.

For "The Three Kings" tribute, Vandercook has augmented his band's regular lineup with a horn section for a bigger, more textured sound. He's also composed new songs and created new arrangements of blues classics made famous by "The Kings."
