U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program

MISSION:
The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

GOAL:
The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.

OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation's most valuable resources -- our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.

ACTIVITIES:
The principal Toys for Tots activity which takes place each year is the collection and distribution of toys in the communities in which a Marine Corps Reserve Unit is located. In communities without a Reserve Unit, the campaign can be conducted by a Marine Corps League Detachment or group of men and women, generally veteran Marines, authorized by Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to conduct a local Toys for Tots campaign. Local Toys for Tots Campaign Coordinators conduct an array of activities throughout the year, which include golf tournaments, foot races, bicycle races and other voluntary events designed to increase interest in Toys for Tots, and concurrently generate toys and monetary donations.

December 17: Dictionary Project at Waikiki Elementary School

December 12: Dictionary Project at Kalihi Kai Elementary School

December 7: Waikiki Community Center: Painting, Clean Up POC: Chad Adams tel: 352-0352 email: chad.b.adams@ampf.com

December 6, 2013: Dictionary Project at Kuhio Elementary School POC: Nora Chen Rotarians will deliver dictionaries to all third grade students and teachers and will share the importance of using a dictionary. Why we are giving dictionaries:A dictionary is perhaps the most powerful reference tool that a child should own. Its usefulness goes beyond the spellings, pronunciations, and definitions it lists; it is a companion for solving problems that arise as a child develops his or her reading, writing, and creative thinking abilities. Students benefit from an increased self-confidence and resourcefulness inspired by the maxim "look it up". Teachers benefit by knowing that their students have consistent access to a tool for homework and in-class explorations. We emphasize the importance of using a dictionary to make sure that all words are spelled correctly. The program is an opportunity for children to expand their vocabulary and for many to actually own a dictionary. A strong vocabulary is an essential tool for gaining knowledge. The limits of an individual's language are the limits of his world. A large vocabulary does not guarantee success but a small vocabulary limits the use that a person can make of his or her natural abilities. Low vocabulary decreases the effectiveness of inborn gifts in any civilization.

December 4th: Waikiki Rotary Readers and Keiki Book Distribution to the Entire Waikiki Elementary School POC: Gloria King tel: 737-1991 email: glory.king@aol.com

December 3, Dictionary Project at Puuhale Elementary School: All third grade students and their teachers will receive a dictionary of their very own. To use as a reference tool in school and a learning tool at home. Why we are giving dictionaries: A dictionary is perhaps the most powerful reference tool that a child should own.
