Chef

Meet our lead chef Kawika!

At the age of 15, Kawika started working for his aunty's restaurant at Big Kahuna Pizza in Salt Lake, Hawaii. From that early experience Kawika knew he wanted to refine his culinary skills, and attended the Culinary Arts Program at KCC after graduating high school. Kawika began working at L'uraku under Chef Hiroshi. As an effective mentor, Hiroshi left the restaurant, and Kawika took over his position.

Kawika has been the Executive Chef for restaurants like Denatos in Manoa, Pasta Basta, Formaggio's in Kailua, and Kincaid's in San Francisco. He was the Executive Sous Chef for Tristar which included restaurants like Sarentos, Aaron's, and the Mixed Fish Market. Kawika was also the Executive Sous for Roy's. He's been a Chef at the Pearl Ultralounge, Stage Restaurant, Michel's Surf Colony, and was the opening chef for the ‘M' Night Club.

Chef Kawika wants everyone to know that CW's will be providing an exquisite array of various food delights, drawing on his history in the industry and his imagination

About The Founder Biography of David John Kenney

David John Kenney was born in 1956 in Wiltshire, England. He was the son of Publicans (Licensees of brewery-owned pubs) and grew up in the trade.

At the age of 15, David went to work for Holiday Inns International as a Trainee Manager. At the age of 24 he was transferred to the United States as an Assistant Food & Beverage Director, working one year at both the Memphis Holiday Inn and at the Las Vegas Holiday Inn.

In 1981 David was assigned to the Holiday Inn Waikiki as the Food & Beverage Director. Five years later he took a position as Food & Beverage Director at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider, but soon realized his entrepreneur dreams of working for himself and opened a mini-mart at the Waikiki Banyan, soon followed by another mini-mart/liquor store on Nimitz Highway and a food concession company.

David later sold these, retaining the food concession business with his long-time friend partner Russ Hoylman, which still is in operation today. David then opened Lazer Shirts, a photo business in Shirokiya Store in Ala Moana Center for the Christmas season. Because of the success, he then moved into the International Market Place (IMP).

After selling Lazer Shirts in 1991, he opened up Coconut Willy's Bar & Grill, followed by the Down Under Bar (site of the old Hofbrau House), which he then moved to the Food Court area, renamed Captain Zack's Bar in IMP . He then opened the Blue Lagoon Café & Bar at the Malia Hotel on Kuhio Avenue (now the International House of Pancakes).

After the Blue Lagoon Café closed, David opened The Paniolo Café in Punaluu with entertainer Don Ho.

David then returned to the IMP and opened Bobby G's Nightclub in the back of Captain Zacks. Even though Captain Zacks was there about 12 years and Bobby G's about 3 years, they were closed when the IMP renovated the food court area.

In 2009, after 19 years at the IMP, David moved Coconut Willy's to the newly developed Lewers Street, called Coconut Willy's Beachwalk where he operated until February 2012. Then after 4 years he had the opportunity to move to the old Hard Rock Café location, located at the Gateway to Waikiki at the corner of Kapiolani Blvd. and Kalakaua Ave.

This larger location will allow David to open a food eat-in and take-out and food truck operation in addition to Coconut Willy's Waikiki.

Additionally, David has been involved with many community/special events throughout the years:

  • Was contracted by Easter Seals as Food Coordinator for concept and execution of the Taste Of Honolulu
  • Served as co-food chairman for First Night (an alcohol-free celebration of New Year)
  • Has been Food Coordinator for the Honolulu City Lights for the past 14 Years
  • Master Concessionaire of Food, Beverage & Crafts at the annual Fourth of July celebration at Schofield Barracks for 18 years
  • Served as Food Chair for Aloha Festivals Ho'olaulea (both Downtown & Waikiki) for four years.
  • Has provided various food services for other special events around Oahu over the years, .such as Honolulu Theatre for Youth. Arthritis Foundation, Library for the Blind and Pacific Handcrafter's Guild.

David is looking forward to bringing a fun and exciting Coconut Willy's to the old Hard Rock Café location, which unfortunately, has become somewhat neglected these past three years.

He became a citizen of the United States in 2000.
