Waiau District Park Recreation Building rededicated following renovation project

O‘AHU – The reopening of a vital park facility in Pearl City was recognized today as part of a rededication ceremony for the Waiau District Park Recreation Building.

Over 50 government officials, community leaders, and park users were in attendance, providing their personal memories and hopes for the recently revitalized park amenity before Kahu Makani Tabura formally blessed the facility.

“We are grateful to finally reopen this facility to the public,” said Honolulu City Councilmember Brandon Elefante. “In collaborating with the Pearl City Neighborhood Board, the community, and the Department of Parks and Recreation we were able to secure funding for much needed renovations to this well-used facility. We look forward to welcoming back the public, community groups, and the Summer Fun Program to this wonderful facility.”

The renovation projects for the recreation building began in August 2020, with initial improvements to the building including: improved drainage; refurbished roofing & flooring; new doors; interior & exterior painting; replacement cabinets, countertops & drinking fountain; improved ADA accessibility; with new ceiling fans and air conditioning. Additional repairs to the exterior columns were later finalized at the end of the initial improvement project, with a combined construction cost of nearly $857,000 and design costs of nearly $197,000.

“We are always thrilled to welcome back the community to enjoy and reactivate facilities such as this rec building following large improvement projects,” said Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation Director Laura H. Thielen. “We think the park users will be thrilled to experience all of the facility improvements. A big mahalo to our counterparts in the Department of Design and Construction for their assistance with these Capital Improvement Projects.”

Other recent renovations to this park include
parking lot repaving efforts in Feb. 2019 and late 2018, resurface play courts & pickleball lining in Sept. 2019, a restored comfort station in July 2018, and a refurbished playground in Nov. 2016.
