Artists in the Schools


Get the arts in your classroom!
The SFCA is accepting Artists in the Schools (AITS) grant applications for the 2022-2023 school year. All public and public charter schools in the State of Hawaiʻi are eligible to apply for one AITS grant per school for artist residencies to be conducted during the 2022-2023 school year. AITS grants are meant to enhance a school’s fine arts curriculum, not supplant it. Application must be completed through the GO Smart online application system at Hawaii.GoSmart.org. The application is due via the GO Smart online application system no later than Friday April 3, 2022 at 11:59 pm HST.

2022 Young Artists of Hawaiʻi
This year’s theme, “what does good leadership look like?”, is an exploration of the qualities of good leadership, how good leaders impact our communities, and who these good leaders are in our families, classrooms, schools, local neighborhoods, and global community. Through the incorporation of suggested classroom discussions and literature, students will be able to submit a piece of artwork to the 2022 Young Artists of Hawai‘i competition that captures these discoveries pertaining to the theme.
Submissions are due April 1, 2022. Please help us get the word out to schools, teachers, and students! All Hawaiʻi public, charter, and private school students grades K-6 are eligible.

2022 Poetry Out Loud

Registration is open! Poetry Out Loud is a free national arts education program for high school students designed to fit a busy schedule, and can be done via distance learning. Students gain public speaking skills, build-self confidence, and learn about classic and contemporary poetry.
Participating teachers/staff receive a toolkit to teach poetry recitation and run class/school/organization level contests. Winners advance to the Hawaiʻi State Finals and ultimately the National Finals. To learn more, view this year's Teacher's Guide on the Poetry Out Loud website:

National Endowment for the Arts
Algorithmic Arts Workshop: The Arts and the Algorithm: An Amalgamation
This two-day workshop, as part of an envisioned series, will assemble a diverse group of Algorithmic Arts (AlgoArts) educators and practitioners to explore, discuss, and propagate successes in broadening public participation in computing in the arts. January 11-12, 2022, 1:00 – 4:30 p.m. EST (8:00-11:30 a.m. Hawaiʻi Standard Time) via Zoom. NEA Challenge America
Challenge America offers support primarily to small organizations for projects in all artistic disciplines that extend the reach of the arts to populations that are under served. Challenge America features an abbreviated application, a robust structure of technical assistance, and grants for a set amount of $10,000. Deadline: April 21, 2022. NEA Literature Fellowships
The National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowships program offers $25,000 grants to published creative writers that enable the recipients to set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement. National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)
The Digital Humanities Advancement Grants program (DHAG) supports innovative, experimental, and/or computationally challenging digital projects, leading to work that can scale to enhance scholarly research, teaching, and public programming in the humanities. The program also supports research that examines the history, criticism, ethics, and philosophy of digital culture or technology and its impact on society. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Preservation and Access is accepting applications for the Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections program. The purpose of this program is to help cultural institutions meet the complex challenge of preserving large and diverse holdings of humanities materials for future generations by supporting sustainable conservation measures that mitigate deterioration, prolong the useful life of collections, and strengthen institutional resilience (i.e., the ability to anticipate and respond to disasters resulting from natural or human activity.) Western Arts Alliance


Performing Arts Discovery (PAD) program – an international video showcase opportunity for US-based performing artists. All US-based performing artists with readiness to tour internationally are eligible for the program. PAD encourages those who self-identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color and/or LGBTQ+ to apply. Applications are open through January 28, 2022. Hawaiʻi Triennial 2022

Call for goods for artist projects: donated surfboards and discarded bottles will become a part of an art installation by artist Leeroy New in the upcoming Hawaiʻi Triennial 2022. Historic Hawaiʻi Foundation: Native Hawaiian Organization Stewardship Training Program
In 2022, Historic Hawai‘i Foundation will launch a new program to partner with Native Hawaiian Organizations (NHO) on hands-on stewardship training for the preservation of historic and cultural sites that are significant to Native Hawaiian organizations and communities. The Request for Expressions of Interest will open in December 2021 with a submittal deadline in early 2022. Eligible NHO Partners meet the definitions and criteria of P.L. 114–221 (130 STAT. 847) as stated in Section 3(3). The term “Native Hawaiian Organization” means a nonprofit organization that (A) serves the interests of Native Hawaiians; (B) in which Native Hawaiians serve in substantive and policymaking positions; and (C) is recognized for having expertise in Native Hawaiian culture and heritage, including tourism. Acquisition Award Selection Committees (AASCs) Upcoming Exhibit Visits
Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits continue to provide important support for artists and arts organization venues statewide. The SFCA has conducted over 20 AASC visits during the pandemic so far.
Exhibit holders invite the SFCA to send an AASC (
application form on the SFCA website), and the qualifying invitations are presented to the SFCA Board of Commissioners for approval.

Hawaiʻi State Art Museum (HiSAM)
Museum galleries are closed through the end of January during new exhibit installation and in-person events (including First Friday) have been cancelled.
