2019 Annual Report

SFCA's annual report for fiscal year 2019 (July 1, 2018 - June 30, 2019) has been published and can be read online: SFCA Fiscal Year 2019 Annual Report. SFCA submits this annual report to the State Legislature.

This Annual Report of 2018 – 2019 offers an overview of the past year’s efforts by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) to focus on the implementation of the goals of its new 2019-2023 Strategic Plan priorities of
Culture, Education, Engagement and the Arts.

Each year our annual report focuses on a different strategic priority, and this report focuses on
the arts. Within the following pages you will see the role of the SFCA and its programs play in supporting the arts in Hawai‘i.

Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. SFCA is the regional affiliate for Hawaiʻi, and pays all Hawaiʻi student entry fees.

“Creating art does more than just give the viewer something interesting to look at,” says
Jonathan Johnson, Executive Director of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. “Engagement in the artistic process fosters creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication, often referred to as ‘21st century skills.’ Students who create art are expressing themselves and gaining an understanding of who they truly are. Having the Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Art Awards exhibit at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum helps the SFCA carry out its mission to promote, perpetuate, and preserve culture and the arts in Hawaiʻi."

Arts Education

The Artists in the Schools (AITS) program for State of Hawai‘i Department of Education (DOE) schools, grades K-12, is currently open for school applications. All Hawai‘i public and charter schools are eligible to apply. The deadline is Monday, April 27, 2020. AITS arts residency grants provide engaging, creative and fun learning experiences based on the Fine Arts standards for all grade levels, through residencies with qualified trained teaching artists from the Artistic Teaching Partners (ATP) Roster. Many of these teaching artists integrate their art form with other core curriculum areas, such as language arts, math, social studies, and science, meeting both Fine Arts and other core standards.

For more information:
Artists in the Schools.

The
Art Bento museum education program for O‘ahu public and charter elementary schools (grades 2-6) is also open for school applications through Friday, March 6, 2020.
The Art Bento Program at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum (HiSAM) is a museum education program of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum serving O‘ahu Department of Education elementary students, Grades 2 – 6, and their teachers. This four-part inquiry-based program actively engages students and teachers through activities connected to current arts standards and ELA Common Core Standards.
This unique multi-disciplinary educational opportunity emphasizes arts and visual literacy and is led by qualified teaching artists from the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts' Artistic Teaching Partners roster. There is no cost to schools to participate in the program and funds for bus transportation are also provided.

O‘ahu elementary schools can have both Artists and the Schools and Art Bento in the same year.

For more information:
Art Bento.

Slow Art Day
Hugs at Hawaii State Art Museum's Fourth Slow Art Day
People who were total strangers at the beginning were sharing deep thoughts and feelings with each other at the end. Some of the participants even hugged each other goodbye!

We love to hear how Slow Art Day can bring people together around meaningfully shared experiences of slowly enjoying art, and look forward to Hawaii State Art Museum’s participation in 2020. [The next Slow Art Day at HiSAM is Saturday, April 4, 2020 at 1:00 p.m.]

Ka Leo O Kalani
2020 Hawaii Regional Scholastic Art Awards
Nine Kalani High School students were recognized at the 2020 Hawaii Regional Scholastic Art Awards in February: Karen Oh (10), Rina Robin (12), Colleen Kagawa (12), Clara Wu (12), Shaye Iwanuma (12), Kent Le (12), Natalie Ou (12), Viani Southichack (12), and Maria Tanaka (12). Additionally, Oh and Robin are American Vision Award nominees, and medals are given to only one artist from each region.

“My art piece is my mom,” Oh said. “I didn’t know what to draw so I just decided to take a pic of her and draw it.”

She did not expect a personal sketch of her mother to earn such a positive reaction.
“I was surprised and didn’t know I was gonna win,” she added.

Island Pacific Academy
IPA Senior Awarded Gold Key at Hawaii Regional Scholastic Art Awards
“Lighting and colors play a huge part in a piece, and almost every single color of lighting angle should be intentional,” writes Finley. “Lighting helps create the mood, which is why I wanted to incorporate it into my piece. It can make a piece more dramatic or make it more angelic if you change the angle of the lighting and the color of the light source. This really fascinated me because I have always wanted to experiment with how lighting can completely change the mood of a piece.”

This annual award contest is sponsored by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) and the Hawai’i State Art Museum (HiSAM). It offers students in grades 7-12 an opportunity to showcase their artwork and talent, and is part of the national Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program sponsored by the non-profit organization, Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.
