Conservation Work & Training
Conservation work was done in March on “The Spirit of Liliʻuokalani” bronze sculpture, part of an SFCA contract with Rosa Lowinger & Associates that includes conservation work on several sculptures in the Art in Public Places Collection, including on Kauaʻi. This contract also includes training sessions for Hawaiʻi-based organizations and contractors (Honolulu Museum of Art, Honolulu Mayor’s Office on Culture and the Arts, Martin & Macarthur, and private contractors).

State Legislators Art Class

Left to right: Rep David Tarnas, Rep. Scot Z. Matayoshi, and Rep. Lisa Kitagawa cutting photos. SFCA Executive Director Jonathan Johnson and Sen. Brian Taniguchi.

Last month, several state legislators participated in a hands-on art making activity led by Teaching Artist Emily McIlroy. This year, the activity was a collage in which the legislators used photos of the State Capitol building (either ones they had taken themselves, or ones provided by the SFCA) and re-imagined the building by cutting and collaging. The finished collages will be displayed at the state legislature’s upcoming Art at the Capitol event (Friday, April 5, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.) and voted on by the public for the People’s Choice Award. Read more on our website:
Legislator's Art Class and Art at the Capitol 2019.

Artists in the Schools Grants

All state of Hawaii public and public charter schools, grades K - 12, are eligible for an Artists in the Schools grant! Bring a professional artist into the classroom to provide an engaging, creative, and fun learning experience based on the Fine Arts standards, integrating an art form with core curriculum areas.
Deadline: April 4, 2019. Grant applications are done in partnership with a teaching artist from an approved list.
Read more on our website:
Artists in the Schools.
Learn more about how the SFCA's Artists in the Schools grants program benefits Hawaii's public school students! Last year, the DOE’s video production team worked with SFCA staff on a series of short, informative videos about the SFCA’s Artists in the Schools program. The videos are now available online and will also be aired on the DOE’s television channel and will be promoted on the DOE website.

50th Anniversary of the Hawaii State Capitol building

The 50th Anniversary of the Hawaiʻi State Capitol was observed March 15-16th with a commemorative event, the “Democracy By Design” symposium and publication and a reception at Washington Place.
The Capitol was dedicated on March 15, 1969 on the tenth anniversary of the passage of the Statehood bill by Congress. Governor John Burns used his opening address to the legislature to expound on the openness and spirit of Hawai‘i:
“The open sea, the open sky, the open doorway, open arms and open hearts—these are the symbols of our Hawaiian heritage…It is by means of this striking architecture of this new structure that Hawai‘i cries out to the nations of the Pacific and of the world this message: `We are a free people…we are an open society…we welcome all visitors to our Island home.’ ”

The commemorative events included Hawaii State Archives displays of artifacts from the 1969 time capsule placed in the state capitol (uncovered earlier this year), and the new time capsule that will be placed later this year.

What would you put in a time capsule? The current schedule has the new time capsule being installed on Statehood Day (August 16, 2019). State Archives is still asking for suggestions for items to be placed in the time capsule, and is taking suggestions from the public at: www.timecapsule.hawaii.gov.
